When we birth, we don’t just birth our babies.
We birth ourselves, we birth our families and we reshape our lives - Dr Sara Wickham
Welcoming motherhood and birthing babies is a rite of passage. It is not learnt, it is remembered - passed down through DNA from women who came before us. Our bodies have the innate ability to grow and birth life. Our task as mothers is to reclaim that wisdom through cultivating trust to our bodies and our inner knowing. It is to learn to identify our needs, recognise our own vision of safety, understand the physiology of birth and hone the special connection with our babies as you both approach this special transition - from womb to Earth.
As a birthkeeper, my task is to honour the mother and hold space for this transition to unfold. It is to listen deeply, witness fully and support unwaveringly. To hold your hand tightly, wipe sweat of your face and reassure you in the moment of need. It is to walk alongside you - from the moment we decide to work together, till your baby arrives earthside. It is to support you in preparation, guide you through the maze of the system (unless you choose to birth outside of it) and advocate for your choices and decisions. I don’t replace your partner; I support them too. I don’t replace the midwives either - my work doesn’t involve medical assessments and tasks. Rather, my role is about nurturing, nourishing and supporting you physically, mentally and spiritually, as you cross the threshold.
